Dental Phobia - seriously serious & terrified?

I was a victim of 'child dentist' back in infants school (1955). I had most of my baby teeth pulled with radio playing loudly, dentist's knee on my chest and plyers. As a primary school kid, my mother took me to a regular dentist who tried to give a needle in the gum only the point broke off and the dentist suffered a fractured shinbone. I was taken to hospital to have the point of the needle removed under general anaesthetic. In high school, a dentist tried gas but that was unsuccessful as I was violently ill in the chair. As a young mother of 4 children, I read "The Art of Positive Thinking", Norman Vincent Peel and had twilight gas but hit the dentist causing his eye to need 4 stitches. Later saw a dentist in Sydney who had available general anaesthetic and wonderfully had all my wisdom teeth out. however, he retired. NOW i am in need of a dentist but finding one in Queensland who gives GA is my problem. Can anyone help? I live in the southern area of Brisbane. Cheers

Hello, you mostly likely will have to go to a dental surgen for a general anaesthetic, for wich u will need a refural from a general dentist. , the best thing u can do is call a local dentist an make an opiontment 4 a chat and tell him/her about your concerns. Most would be very understanding and careing about your sirutation, if u dont get a good vibe.. then try someone else. im not sure if a GP can give a refural, but a ph call would answer that... Also try the QLD Dental Association http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.pht... ph:07 3252 9866 they would be able to tell you if there is anyone in your area that can help you. all the best.

Reply:Hey there. The only other option I could think of, if you can't find a dentist who gives GA, is psychotherapy, possibly looking into hypnosis. A good psychologist can help teach you techniques that will give you the ability to turn off the 'panic' mode in your brain that happens when you're at the dentist. A phobia is a learned behaviour and is reversible. If money is an issue, check with your local hospital to see if there are free psychology services available.
