My chihuahua has retained canines and is 7 months old..... need some info.?

My chihuahua is 7 months old exactly and I noticed his adult teeth started growing in while his primary (baby) teeth remained. His mandibular teeth grew in beside his adult teeth toward his tongue as if he has a shark's mouth and his maxillary teeth are growing in front of the primary teeth between the baby canine and his 3rd incisor. Is this normal and will the teeth fall out on their own in a couple weeks or a month or is this a sign they will be retained for good and will require a vet extraction? How long should I wait to see if they fall out on their own?

You really don't want your dog's bite getting messed up for life because of this. It can cause A LOT of problems down the road. Many vets will not even do a baby tooth extraction on a dog and require you to go to a canine dentist ( yes there is such a thing!) Check it out ASAP. Give the dog raw marrow bones to chew and loosen up those baby teeth. I don't not believe that retained teeth should be left, however it if the root has not dissolved it may be very expensive to remove it. Take the pup to the Vet and see what he says. Good luck!
Reply:All of my male Chihuahuas have done this but by the time they reached 8 months, their puppy canines fell out so their adult ones could grow in. Just in case though, you may want to visit a vet if they don't fall out in a few weeks.
Reply:If they are not at least loose, they will need to be extracted, but it's not major surgery since they are primaries. Leaving them in can cause problems. My pup had double fangs like that; cute but had to be taken out.
Reply:usually a vet will remove these during the neuter surgery.

if you're not going to have him neutered, and i'm going to refrain from the bazillion reasons why you should because it's late and i'm tired, make an appt with your vet. he should have lost these by now.

the longer you wait the more misalligned the adult teeth will become and can cause issues later in life. it's a simple procedure and one that you'll want to take care of sooner than later.
Reply:Not totally sure. I would check with your vet. The worry is that the perm teeth come in in such a way that eating could be difficult. You cant put braces on a chihuahua.
Reply:This is a common problem with Chihuahuas. If by 8 months the baby teeth have not fallen out, they will need to be removed. If they are not removed, they will die from the inside, rot, and lead to a nasty infection in the gums.

Take him to the vet and have them look at it, this is your best option to prevent unneccesary pain and injury to your puppy.

This is exactly what happened to my Chihuahua and she had her canine removed last month. It only cost $45 for anesthesia (dogs under 20lbs), and $10 for the extraction.

Good Luck!
