Wisdom teeth out. told dentist would take care of insur. bill sent 2med ins not dental claim denied. what 2 do

I was told by the oral surgen office that they would decifer who would pay for more coverage dental or medical insurance. Come to find out they went with my medical insurance. They told me that my balance was $410, and insurance would pay the rest. I paid that. Then I get a bill saying that the claim was denied due to not being refered by my primary care physcian, and I owe the remainder of the balance: $2400.00. What are my options. I was refered by my delta dental dentist, do I demand that they chase them down. I am not paying this. My teeth were not hurting, but though that it would be a good preventitive measure.

If you have dental insurance call the insurance company and explain the problem to them and have the dentist office send them the bill, and if you have paid anything yet, they should reimburse you.
Reply:Talk to delta about it. They don't usually have to have a referral from a pcp. sounds like your dentist may have screwed up explaining it to them.
Reply:If you have an HMO medical insurance, which it sounds like you do, then yes, you would of needed a referral from your primary care doctor to have your widsom teeth pulled. I would call your primary care doctor and explain to them what happened. More than likely they will issue you a back-dated referral (the date you had your teeth pulled) and send it to your dentist so the dentist can then resubmit the bill along with the referral. Some insurances won't pay because it was preventative and the teeth were not impacted - so, they may deny it stating it was unncecessary.

If not, call your dental carrier and see if they will pay any or all of the bill.
